Library news roundup: nexgen catalogs, institutional repositories, and more

Well, since I have so many little library related tidbits floating around in my reader, I'm just going to do a roundup:

twitting a twebinar

So, I'm in the middle of a twebinar called Game Changing Moves: Who Really Owns Your Brand?Anyhow, so it's a webinar with a twitter element thrown in and I am taking a break. The topic is interesting (branding in the web2.0+ world), but I think this might be more multitasking than my brain can handle. I'm having a hard time watching the video feed, listening to the audio, and reading the ongoing companion stream of quickly appearing dialogue going on via twitter.

Tables + CSS (and captioning an image)

For those of you who use CSS in web design (or have been following its evolution), you may remember the battle cry of "tables are dead" from a few years ago, which was soon followed by rallying cry "Long live tables!" According to the thinking (and gurus) at the time, EVERYTHING that could be done with a table could be done with div layout and a little creativity. In spite of the fact that tables can easily resolve some very tricky problems and can be styled with CSS, tables are still kind of a dirty word in web design.

drupal - what it is & how it works (overview)

For those unfamiliar with Drupal it is a largescale opensource CMS for a website which is used by the likes of Tim Berners-Lee. Drupal is scalable and modular built which even includes design elements. Each Drupal website is like a house built out of legos -- just like legos fit together to create something (a working door, a roof, etc.) which then creates the overall house, the modules fit together to create larger functionality, which in turn, creates the website. Sounds confusing? Not really these days.

Catalog paired with a website (Drupal and III)

Here is a prototype of a library catalog (III's Millenium) wrapped on the library website with Drupal (a MOSTLY opensource website content management system -- mostly because a commercial version of Drupal is now under development).

The Drupal module for integrating the library catalog includes modules like ratings (Fivestar), Faceted Search, and Similar by Terms.

Exporting from Expression Engine (step by step)

I promised the friendly folks over at textpattern that I would write something about exporting entries from expression engine. This link in the ee wiki MOSTLY covers it. I say mostly, because you'll need to make some modifications which are not listed but that I am including. Additionally, you will need to be careful to do all of the steps in order, so I'm just going to go step by step. Also, if you have used subcategories, I haven't found a way to capture that hierarchical structure.
