Learn a new language with Babbel (not babelfish)

I think this sounds like a really interesting way to learn a language -- social networking & multimedia style! Mashable has a good overview & review here:
Babbel is the latest site to teach new languages through a social Web-based immersion program, where the majority of the content is packaged into lessons created by Babbel. So far, languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, English, and German are supported.

Google and Librarians -- the lovelorn relationship

Well, if you haven't heard all of the chatter and buzz, Google Librarian Central hadn't been updated in a year (before today, that is)...and Google wasn't at ALA leaving some librarians to call out google for punking librarians or even using librarians, while other librarians proclaimed,

Google goes 3D?

Okay, not quite... at least, not yet. ;-)
Google has entered yet another space with the launch of Lively, a tool for creating 3D social spaces on Web sites, which is now available in a public beta test. The platform lets users create and personalize their own character, so-called avatars, and their own rooms, which is nothing new: Second Life does as much. But a key feature of the Lively platform is integration with the regular Internet.

Second Life Shakespeare

Now this sounds coool -- if only I get my avatar out of theocean (I'm just as clumsy in SL as I am in real life, APPARENTLY) ;-)sLiterary, Second Life: Of shipwrecked twins separated in a foreign land, lovetriangles mixed with identity confusion, and girl masquerading as guy falling inlove with her noble… The SL Shakespeare Company takes a brief hiatus from Hamletto pursue a full length performance of Twelfth Night—broken down into "bite-size"chunks in a series of full-costume staged readings.

..and finally.. the rest of the story

Not exactly sure what happened with the search functionality in the opensource software that I've been working with. After going through the php and template files line by line, nothing ever jumped out as being a problem. I even tried reverting to an older version of the search code + template, but that didn't work, either, which really doesn't make sense. I finally did get everything fixed, mostly through a painstaking process.

sigh.

So, the opensource dev group I've been working with has hit a snag... or maybe, I'm the only one who has hit the snag. The rest of the group is remarkably quiet -- I think it is because some of them haven't upgraded yet! ;-DI seem to have a broken search template and for the life of me, I can't make sense of it.SOoooo... that is what I have been doing. Upgrading, re-installing, installing, tweaking code, scrapping it all...sigh. I need to give my head a break, I think. The lead developer has been very helpful, but I'm not sure he can make sense of it, either. uh-oh....
