new things for 2008... crystal ball gazing with opensource, social networking, digital identity, and more aka the predictions.

I was poking around trying to find a better video editor, when I stumbled across an opensource project called, Jahshaka. Jahshaka is positioning itself as being a fullbodied product that can compete with such software as finalcut pro (wow!). Not sure about that, because I could never (ever, ever) get the windows installer to work properly. Maybe if I had already switched to ubuntu ALREADY...

digital video and compatibility

I have a kind of old video/dvd converter/player thingie which works OK, but compatibility is a serious problem. The problem I am having now is that apparently only DVD+RW VIDEO works in my machine. I am also wondering if only the Maxwell brand ones will work.I recently transferred a conference meeting to DVD but something went terribly wrong -- sound is almost nonexistent (no it's not like that on the original recording). I used a DVD+RW disc, but apparently I need to find one that also designates Video. Can you download firmware upgrades for standalone dvd players?

Blog housekeeping -- the feed, facebook, and wordpress

All~I've burned the feed for contentdivergent at feedburner so that I can also blog (without doing any work!) on my facebook page. For those of you who subscribe via bloglines, google reader, thunderbird, etc. if you don't see any updates in the next few days, please let me know. I don't think this will cause any problems to your ability to receive new postings, but I'm not sure about that.As for those of you who may read my mirror (and test!) blog at wordpress.com, I'm still trying to find a way to post to both blogs at the same time. I've read that twitter will do this.

digital identity

One of the things that I think will become even more important in the future, is developing and controlling your personal digital identity. In googling my name, I mostly find stuff that I have put out there at the top (I own my domain namesake), but then there are other things which are not me, too. A couple of doctors, a creative writer, various other things. Nothing too scary or potentially harming in terms of my digital identity, albeit potentially confusing. While I do write, I do not publish creative pieces online.

Art Installation in Second Life Wows Educators

If art schools around the world start introducing their students to “hyperformalism,” credit can go to DC Spensley, who invented the term to describe abstract three-dimensional works created using software and personal computers.
